THENEWPRINT: New DJ Royalty Program - TheFuture.FM
Dubset Media Holdings, a music industry leader in rights-flow and fingerprint technology, today announced the launch of the world’s first formal DJ Royalty Program being offered by its internet radio site Thefuture.fm. Powered by the company’s patent-pending MixSCAN™ technology, Thefuture.fm provides one of the only platforms for DJs to share mixes with their fans under full rights compliance. Now, for the first time in history, DJs will begin earning multiple royalties themselves. The company recently surpassed two and a half million mix-plays by listeners.
Dubset’s MixSCAN™ technology is what makes sharing those mixes legal. It parses mixes into thousands of individual audio files, comparing each against the world’s largest music database, Gracenote. The resulting output is an industry first “Mix DNA” that not only identifies all underlying music but all rights metadata associated with it. The platform is rights compliant and fully integrated with all performance rights organizations including ASCAP, SESAC, BMI, and SoundExchange. It reports all mix and listener data downstream and makes necessary royalty payments on behalf of the site and the DJ.
“As more and more mixes are taken down from the free internet music sites. DJs are starting to understand the risks and work associated with sharing their music in the wrong places. The volume of DJs who now successfully offer their music at Thefuture.fm has allowed us to give back and create an important royalty program for them.” The company estimates DJs will earn nearly 55 million dollars in new royalties over the coming years thanks to MixSCAN™. - Full Story Here.
SoundExchange Announces $1 Billion Paid to Artists & Labels
“SoundExchange is proud of delivering one billion dollars to the creative community. This milestone reflects the fact that the digital music industry is evolving and will continue to grow,” said Michael Huppe, president, SoundExchange. “We’re optimistic about where the music industry is headed and see opportunity for SoundExchange to help both creators and digital music services thrive. We’re proud of this achievement and everything we’ve done to ensure that this money makes its way into the hands of artist and labels.”
In the first quarter of 2012, the organization distributed $108.6 million total royalties - the first time SoundExchange distributions have exceeded $100 million in a given quarter. These numbers continue to reflect the outstanding growth in the digital music industry and present a wake-up call to those artists who have yet to register and take advantage of the money available to them. This Is SoundExchange & This Is How You Register
‘SoundExchange is the non-profit performance rights organization that collects statutory royalties from satellite radio (such as SIRIUS XM), internet radio, cable TV music channels and similar platforms for streaming sound recordings. The Copyright Royalty Board, which is appointed by The U.S. Library of Congress, has entrusted SoundExchange as the sole entity in the United States to collect and distribute these digital performance royalties on behalf of featured recording artists, master rights owners (like record labels), and independent artists who record and own their masters.’
The Company Man & I recently had the opportunity to speak with the VP of Communications at Soundexchange, Marie Knowles. Marie was extremely knowledgable and informative on the inner-workings of Soundexchange, and gladly answered questions regarding the company’s background, mission, trends in the industry, digital & terrestrial radio, and the outstanding growth in royalties paid to musicians ($900M to date). While TCM and I work more on that interview and the book it will be presented in, I wanted to highlight Soundexchange in a post & make artists aware that Soundexchange may have money waiting for you, so you should register to claim it!The video above will explain more about Soundexchange & the video below will walk you through the simple registration process.
